Franco Betti
Professor Emeritus
Franco Betti (1932–2019) was a scholar of Italian and Central European literature and a longtime member of the faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles. Born in Florence, Italy, Betti later moved to the United States, where he began his academic career and eventually joined UCLA’s Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies. He started teaching as an assistant professor in the 1960s and remained at UCLA for several decades, retiring as Professor of Italian in 2016.
Betti’s research focused on Hungarian literature, Renaissance culture in Central Europe, and Jewish life and intellectual history in Renaissance Europe. Through his teaching and scholarship, he contributed to expanding the study of Central European cultural and literary traditions within Italian and comparative literary studies.
During his career at UCLA, Betti taught a wide range of courses on Italian literature and culture and supervised graduate research in Italian studies. He played an important role in mentoring students and contributing to the development of Italian studies within the department.
After more than five decades of teaching and scholarship, Betti retired as Professor Emeritus of Italian at UCLA. His work remains part of the intellectual legacy of the department and the broader field of European literary studies.
